Economy forces Class A rethink!

My wife and I have been affected like most in the stock market. The 30% drop in our portfolio and our approaching fulltime date has caused a lot of rethinking and recalculating. Up until about 2 mo. ago we were pretty sure we would get a 3-5 year used DP. Now we are not sure if that is still possible. In the end it is about the money.
We have now thought that maybe we should go with a gasser instead of a DP. We are limiting our Class A to around the $80,000 price range with just a little wiggle room. We will be work camping about 4 -5 months a year so we will be sitting some. I think we will be moving about every week to a couple of weeks when traveling and not working. We have not made up our mind either way but would like to hear from someone that could offer us some insights. We are waiting for the lake house to sell. Since we don't know how long this will be, we must be prepared to leave in 4-6 weeks if and when we get a contract on the house.

RV Show -Atlanta (eye opener)

Just back from the Atlanta RV Show. Boy, it was an eye opener. Not because of all the RV dealers and vendors. Hardly any dealer or vendors were there. I knew as soon as I arrived at the parking lot that this would not be like shows in the past. Parking lot was very sparse. Inside only a small crowed of RV viewers. I knew things were tight but did not realized things were this depressed. Let us hope things get better.

Final Resting Place (a little long - sorry)

As my wife and I plan for Full-Time RVing we had to confront an issue that most of us want to put off for later. The final resting place. As it turned out, this was very easy. So we thought we would share.
We have not had deep roots for most of our adult life. I served in the Navy for almost 25 yrs. Without going into the boring details we are now located back in our state of origin - GA. We are living on Lake Sinclair near Milledgeville GA. A very nice medium size college town (Ga. College & State Univ.). Our son upon completion of a 5 yr stint in the Navy(Subs)is now finishing up his SR year at GC&SU in May of 09 and has indicated he is moving to Oregon then! We are hoping to be able to depart on FTing in June of 09. So we are trying to execute our action plan!
So I started thinking about the "What if" issue. As previously stated we really don't have any ties to any one area. I rememberered that I have access to National Cemetaries as a veteran. I knew there was a Veteran's Cemetary located just south of Milledgeville. I have been there in the past for a military org. ceremony. Being familiar with it I started my search on the internet there. It was actually part of the state of GA Veterans system and not the national VA. After determining the requirements I took my son out to the cemetary and ran it past him. We joked that he would never visit it any way.
Of course the real test would be what the DW thought. So one day after work I told her we needed to plan for the last stop and exaplained to her that I wanted to take her out to the "Ga Veterans Memorial Cemetary". She agreed and off we went.
As soon as we got to the entrance She said this is very nice. We drove around and got out and looked at things. Before we left she said this is it and "you did good, Jimbo" I love it when she says that.
She filled out the paperwork as soon as we got home. So we crossed another item off of our "to do list". I did not expect it go this well.
I shared this because I thought others might be putting this off and it may help them with their "final stop" planning. Sorry it got so long.
For any Ga veterans here is a link that may be useful. I must say that the little picture does not show the true beauty of the cemetary. Link Ga Veterans Memorial Cemetary

RE: Retirees - Decision to Retire

My wife and I are facing the "when to retire" issue also. We both are mentally ready to retire. I retired from the Navy in 1995, so we know we can count only on that income if we decide to go next summer. If I work for three more yrs to age 61 I can retire from the school system and get about $1000.00 a month (10yr retirement). We have IRA accounts that will generate about $20,000 in interest income, but we are not planning on using this unless we just had to. At 62 additional income would be available from SS. If I decide to wait the three years I don't think income will be an issue.
If we go next summer (I'll be 59) we plan to workamp to make some income about 4 mo out of the year.
We want to go ahead and go while our health is ok. We both are ready for a little less stress in the work place. Did I mention that I am a middle school teacher!

Ready to sell House - Need Advice

My wife and I are ready to enter the RV-fulltime lifestyle, but we must sell the house first. Yes, we know this may be a long process. Our target date is May/June 09.
We live on Lake Sinclair near Milledgeville GA. We would like to list our house on-line but do not have any experience selling a house this way. If anyone has gone through this process, we would be interested in and appreciate any and all advice on this.
We are not attempting to be a FSBO. Looking for a nontraditional means of selling house. We expect to pay a "selling commission" to the selling agent (3-4%). We do not want to list the house in a traditional way. Hope this is not confusing.
Thanks in advance!

RE: Expected Campground Compensation?

Boblou:
Based on your info, you are not under contract so you would be within your rights to quit. Just give a reasonable notice. That would not be unethical. Sometimes things just don't work out or there is a lack of communication.

RE: Expected Campground Compensation?

Thanks to all who have offered advice.
While on a day trip to Pine Mtn GA. I stopped at the "Pine Mtn Campground" and discussed their workcamper policy.
At present they pay $7.00 per hr for hrs worked. Workcamper pays for their site at the rate of $450.00 per month. They indicated this was a better deal than "working for a free site". Ie.. 25 hrs per week = 100 hrs of work for a site per mo. At $7.00 an hr the site would be costing $700.00 per month. I know there are other things to consider but this did provide another way of looking at the issue.

Expected Campground Compensation?

My wife and I are planning to go fulltiming within a year or so after placing the house on the market next March. Our financial situation will require that we work at least 6 months of the year. We have no idea as what to expect in compensation. If anyone could offer an estimate or range of the expected compensation for these positions for planning purposes, it would greatly help us with our decision.
Husband is retired military and is currently a school teacher and the wife has worked in the banking industry. Both are computer literate and have excellent communication skills. Neither is opposed to light physical work.
Thanks,
Jim & Judy

RV 101 Basics

Just a wannabe currently in the research phase. I have seen some ads for RV 101 type dvds/VHS that go over the operations of the various MH systems and safety topics. I would like to know if anyone has any experience with these type of products and if it is worth checking out.

Which TriCare Plan?

As my wife and I plan for our full-time RV experience in the future, we need some advice on TRiCare.
Background: I retired in 1995 from the USN and have been covered by employer plans. We have no experience with TriCare. If we decide to go full-time, Rving insurance coverage will be a major consideration. We are 58/55 years of age.
Please offer advice as to the reliability / availability of TriCare while traveling..
Thanks in advance

RE: Honda CR-V advice needed

Thanks to all who offered advice. You played no small role in our decision to go with the Honda CR-V.
We just today purchased a 2008 CR-V EX(L)2wd. My wife chose the Borrego Beige color with ivory leather seats. I voted for the EX model but my wife liked the EX(L)model. I was satisfied with the price, $24,800.00. We went through Cars Direct and was pleased with the experience.

Honda CR-V advice needed

My wife and I have made the decision to purchase a CR-V but are not familiar with the models (LX,EX or EX-L). I assume that these are the three trims offered. We would like some advice on 2wd vs 4wd. We do not intend to be going off-road.
What options do you consider important to have.
Thanks for your imput/advice.

Class of 2011

My wife and I are down to the T-3 (three year ) countdown window.
If you are planning on starting full-timing around this time, we would like to hear from you. We are always appreciative of advice from veteran full-timers and look forward to your advice also.
We hope to be on the road around June of 2011. We are in the research phase now. Went to the Atlanta RV show yesterday. We are going to go to the upcoming MH Rally in Perry GA. We have selected a date to put the house on the market. Of course we are still deciding on a MH but plan to purchase one between a year and six months out.

RE: I put the fire to my Real Estate Agents Feet!!!

Here is our example of buying a house. We relocated to the Lake Sinclaire area in GA in 03. The housing market was a sellers market not a buyers market as it is today. We looked at one house in July that was priced at $269,000.00. We thought it was overpriced, it was an awful color, did not have a dock/ boat house. We did not even look at it or consider it. Long story short in the fall we bought this house because the price was lowered not raised. Once the price was lowered we actually went and looked at the house, something we had not done when it was priced at $269,000.00. Raising the price is not going to get people to look at your house. I too would get a new agent or put it 4 sale by owner. Keep in mind it is a buyers market now. If you can't afford to lower your price you might want to consider renting it out. Also keep in mind each month you have to make another payment unless the house is already paid for and you have to keep your life/plans on hold. OH I almost forgot to mention we bought the house for $225,000.00!
